Joseph Brennan Rigg (b.1995) is a figurative oil painter, and poet. He refers to traditions of the great classics, late-romantics, symbolists, and surrealists; aiming to facilitate for engagement with subconscious and archetypal themes.
Brennan began attending painting courses at the College of Southern Nevada in 2016. In 2018 he embarked independently on a grand tour to workshop and visit the greatest museums across Italy, Spain, France, and the UK. In 2020 he created courses in Perspective Drawing and Anatomy for the Artist at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. He is currently living and working as a picture framer, fine artist, and instructor in Everett, WA.
These paintings are thematically linked with water, seen by the artist primarily as a symbol of the unconscious. Fierce primordial creatures guard our depths. Merfolk, breathing both underwater and on the land, act as Sentinels to the Threshold; Mercuric messengers between what is known and what is unknown. Waist deep we wade, baiting for a catch that may sustain us. Ideas and emotions carve through our mountainous blockades of thought and persona, they erupt from us, softening our crag-jagged edges in a deluge of half-haunted remembrances and suppressed memories. While we sleep, the moon tenderly watches over us, and protects our dreams. She pulls on our blood and arouses us to our passions.
